“The Crown of Creation” is the fifth album of this Norwegian band. They may be a 70’s hardrock band, as they claim and that may be true for their previous albums, but this new release is anything but a hardrock cd.
The emphasis lies completely on the symphonic orchestra, the violin and the recorder and the album should be catalogued as a progressive neo-classic rock opera.
Now that it’s labelled, let’s listen to the music itself.
The music is changing between classical music, semi-heavy rock, sometimes but too scarce, a heavier piece and ballads. All of this is brought at the highest quality. Adding the symphonic orchestra was a brilliant idea and Jan Stigmer’s violin is playing a very important part on this album.
The ballads are very melodic. Just listen to “When The Phoenix Flies” , “By a White Lace” and many more. Jon Ruder has a fantastic voice and he is helped by a great female singer, whose name I can’t find anywhere.
The guitars are present, but not enough, in my opinion, certainly not when you know that there are three guitar players in the band. If you get to know the CD better, you will discover more and more guitar parts, but they are a bit pushed away by the symphonic orchestra. If you look at a few YouTube videos on their site ( www.luciferwas.com ) you will hear the difference, because live, the guitars are much more in front.
My favourite tracks are “Rising Sun” with a recorder part, “Bethanian Theme” with a fabulous organ solo and the great instrumental “Cabris Sans Cornes”. The opener of the album is one of the heavier pieces, with a flute (yes, sorry, I have to mention the name Ian Anderson) part.
Thematically it’s a journey from before the beginning of everything, the universe, and to what’s called escathology, which is the teachings of the final things to come.
If you like rock opera’s, you should really try this one because it sounds as if Andrew Lloyd Webber has written a rock oriented masterpiece.



“The Crown of Creation” is het vijfde album van deze Noorse groep. Ze mogen dan al een 70’s hardrockgroep, zoals ze zelf beweren en dat kan misschien kloppen voor hun vorige albums, maar deze nieuwe uitgave is alles behalve een hardrock CD.
De nadruk ligt volledig op het symfonisch orkest, de viool en de blok- en andere fluiten en het album valt eerder onder de categorie van de progressieve neo-klassieke rock opera’s.
Nu het kind een naam heeft, is het interessant om het even over de muziek te hebben.
De nummers switchen voortdurend tussen klassieke muziek, halfzachte rock, soms, maar veel te schaars, een harder stuk en heel wat ballades. Maar alles wordt gebracht op het hoogste niveau. Het symfonisch orkest toevoegen was een briljant idee en Jan Stigmer’s viool speelt een zeer belangrijke rol op dit schijfje.
De ‘ballads’ zijn zeer melodieus. Luister maar eens naar “When The Phoenix Flies” , “By a White Lace” en vele anderen. Jon Ruder heeft een fantastische stem en hij word took nog eens geholpen door een zeer goede zangeres, wiens naam ik nergens teruggevonden heb.
De gitaren zijn wel aanwezig, maar, in mijn opinie, niet voldoende. Vooral als je weet dat er drie gitaristen in de groep zitten. Eenmaal je de CD beter leert kennen, ontdek je geleidelijk aan meer gitaarwerk, maar het wordt weggeduwd door het symfonisch orkest. Als je de YouTube filmpjes bekijkt op hun site, www.luciferwas.com , zal je merken dat de gitaren tijdens live optredens meer naar de voorgrond treden.
Mijn favoriete nummers zijn “Rising Sun” met een blokfluit stukje, “Bethanian Theme” met een fabelachtige ‘Ken Hensley’ orgelsolo en het prachtige instrumentale “Cabris Sans Cornes”. Het openingsnummer van de CD is één van de hardste stukken, geholpen door een dwarsfluit. (en, inderdaad, sorry, de naam Ian Anderson komt weer boven ;-))
Het thema van de nummers is een reis die start voor het begin van het heelal tot de escathologie (de leer van het einde van de wereld).
Als je van rock opera’s houdt, dan moet je deze zeker eens proberen, want het lijkt alsof Andrew Lloyd Webber een rock georiënteerd meesterwerk heeft geschreven.
